"Are you wearing that?" FAQs
What is this newsletter, and what's included in my paid subscription?
"Are you wearing that?" is a newsletter about getting dressed that goes out every Tuesday @ 3 p.m. Central. In the last year, I have written a three-part series on analyzing personal style, the limitations to finding yours, and how to detect it in others. I have also written about the personal styles of famous people like Zoë Kravitz and Blake Lively; you can read those for free. Some other crowd favorites are letters about my struggles with feeling content with my wardrobe and what prevents and distracts me from reaching contentment.
On the third Tuesday, I send out an edition of "Tiny Pleasures," which compiles things I've engaged with — what I've watched, read, and listened to, and what's exciting (to me) in fashion, including designers, upcoming collections, runway shows and more — the previous month.
Twice a month, I send out an episode of "This is Not a SATC Podcast," co-hosted with my friend Jen Semelka, where we cover the costuming, relationships, and more on one of the most culturally impactful TV shows to exist. The first season is available to all subscribers. Our podcast will be available on Spotify and Apple soon, but you can now listen via the Substack app. We have been told that episode 4 is our best one, so listen here to understand what to expect.
Whenever I can, I send out links to vintage and secondhand items on eBay, TRR, Vestiaire, and Poshmark via subscriber chats (which you can access by downloading the Substack app). I also use this space to sell some of my clothes and will open it up for paid subscribers to sell/trade their clothes soon!
I occasionally send out threads for paid subscribers to give me feedback on what they want to see more. I also ask questions that may help me develop an idea I feel stuck with or want more input before writing about it.
What's in the founding member subscription?
This subscription tier includes everything I have listed above, plus one hour of personal styling each year. You can choose between a wardrobe consultation or a personal styling consultation. You can read about these services and what to expect on my website.
When you are ready to claim this free consultation, please reply to any of the newsletters in your email, and I will follow up to schedule a time and send everything you need to be prepared for our meeting.
This 1-hour consultation never expires and can be transferred and combined with personal styling hours accrued from previous years.
What can I read to get more of a feel for your work?
I've put together a sample platter for those who are new here and for free subscribers who are on the fence:
Tiny Pleasures Vol 1 (my monthly compilation described above)
Zoë Kravitz is figuring things out (one of my favorite letters to write; a deep dive into someone's wardrobe or personal style)
The pursuit of 'Finding your personal style' is ruining your wardrobe (the first installment of a series, where I write about how to pursue wardrobe clarity — contentedness with one's wardrobe and an understanding of why we gravitate to the garments we do.)
Guest writing:
All subscribers are also invited to pitch and write guest letters. (I have accepted that I am not always the right person to write on a topic I still feel is important to share here, so I want to make room for others.)
Here's how:
I no longer send pitch requests as planned because we had a bad run. However, you can email me with your pitches, and I will respond promptly.
If interested, I will tell you about compensation before we continue with feedback and drafting.
After we've agreed on compensation (based on word count and other factors I'm working out), you will have two weeks to send your first draft. Depending on how many editing rounds are needed, I will require that you send back revisions be sent back to us within three days of receiving edits and notes.
Again, I want to clarify that you can pitch even if you've never published anywhere. If you have a perspective that you think I would be interested in OR you have an idea that you need help developing, this will suit you!
Draft pitch template
Name:
Email address: Feel free to share any other social media handles you want to include.
What’s your idea?: Tell me the gist of the topic/argument/subject you want to explore in this letter. This doesn’t have to be lengthy — just 3-4 sentences that will give me a loose outline of what you want to write.
(Many of my letters combine words, images, and links to carry the reader along, so feel free to approach your letter creatively. Here is an example to spark your ideas:
(Use the other letters I have shared in the sample platter above.)
Tell me more about you: This doesn’t have to be long either, but this is an excellent place to tell me anything else on your mind that you think might be relevant. Here are some questions you might consider: What excites you about writing out this idea? What aspects of your personal history or experience are informing your perspective?
To send pitches, respond to any past newsletters. I am withholding my email because others have used it for marketing and PR purposes, which has been a nightmare!
