This newsletter is in your inbox and outside of the abyss that is my Google Docs drafts because of this TikTok. The video is brilliant marketing from a clothing brand called “Unfinished Apparel,” when it appeared on my “For You” page, I didn’t realize it was advertising because I was engrossed in what she was explaining. In the video, this business owner illustrates why most people don’t look the way they want in oversized hoodies. She points out that people ignore subtleties that make the oversized hoodie look relaxed and explains the difference: There’s a slight gap, past the seat, between the hem of the hoodie and your skirt/trousers. The hoodie should not hug around your seat; it should hang on you, giving it a relaxed look.
On this SATC IG, I followed last year while looking for resources for the podcast, some SATC fanatics recently identified one of my favorite looks on Carrie in Season 1 Episode 4. Carrie is wearing a silver dress by Marc Jacobs that looks tailored to slightly hug her around the hips, a sheer grey organza coat, a black clutch, and silver-heeled sandals by Dolce and Gabanna with a purple fur detail on the toe strap. I clicked on the IG handle of the person who IDed the dress and saw that her whole schtick is to hunt down exact or similar garments from SATC only to omit elements that make the original looks memorable.
In the video where she recreates Carrie’s look from S1E4, she is wearing the exact Marc Jacobs dress and seems to have misunderstood everything else about the look. I watched the video 3 times before having articulate thoughts about what I observed. A friend I showed it to said she is neither referencing nor copying well, and I was immediately inspired to write this.
